BF Tower Expansion Project

The BF Tower Expansion Project, is a historic restoration bringing Bradford’s rich railroad history to life. As one of the last remaining Pennsylvania Railroad (PRR) Interlocking Switch Towers, BF Tower holds both local and national significance.

 

This project will restore its operational features and create engaging, interactive exhibits for visitors to experience.

PROJECT SCOPE

The BF Tower Expansion Project, a historic restoration and interactive experience that will preserve and celebrate Bradford’s rich railroad history. As one of the last remaining Interlocking Switch Towers of the Pennsylvania Railroad (PRR), BF Tower is a significant piece of our local and national heritage. This project aims to restore and enhance the tower, bringing its operational elements back to life while creating engaging exhibits and interactive displays for visitors.

Through careful restoration and expansion, we will showcase the inner workings of railroad operations, from signal control to track maintenance, ensuring future generations can experience the legacy of the Bradford Junction.

Project Details

Restoration of the Model Board & Interlocking System

The model board will be restored to full functionality, interacting with the levers, signals, and switch mechanisms to demonstrate how train movements were controlled.

Conversion of the PRR Motor Car

The historic PRR Motor Car will be converted into an electric-powered operational vehicle, running on a demonstration track for visitors to experience.

Tagalong Passenger Car

Originally used to transport tools, the Tagalong will be repurposed with seating to carry passengers along the track, offering a unique ride experience.

Standard Gauge Demonstration Track

Installed by Fritz, Rumor, and Cooke, this track will provide an authentic setting for operating restored railroad equipment.

Additional Exhibits & Structures

Future expansions will include a Section House, Crossing Shanty, and Tool House adding to the immersive historical experience as funding becomes available.

Railroad Tool House Project

As part of the BF Tower Expansion, the museum will construct a Pennsylvania Railroad Tool House, closely following the 1911 PRR blueprint. This structure will provide essential shelter for historic rail equipment while also serving as a versatile space for exhibits and events.

  • Equipment Storage – Houses the section car “Speeder”, railroad cart, “Thomas”, and caboose.

  • Exhibit Expansion – Additional space to showcase historic railroad artifacts.

  • Meeting & Event Space – A functional area for museum gatherings and educational programs.
